Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit India in September 2026 to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit 2026, according to confirmation from the Kremlin. The summit will take place in Delhi on September 12 and 13 and is expected to bring together leaders from major emerging economies under the BRICS grouping.
The Kremlin stated that Putin’s visit will last for two days, marking his second trip to India within a year. Earlier, in December 2025, the Russian President visited India for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, where he held extensive talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During that meeting, both nations discussed key issues related to defense cooperation, energy partnerships, trade expansion, and global geopolitical developments.
India officially assumed the BRICS presidency in January 2026. Soon after, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar unveiled the summit’s official theme, logo, and website, signaling the beginning of preparations for the major international event. The upcoming summit is expected to focus on economic cooperation, geopolitical stability, trade growth, and strengthening ties among member nations.
Putin’s planned visit comes shortly after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov traveled to India for a BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting earlier this month. His visit highlighted the continued diplomatic engagement between the two countries ahead of the summit.
India and Russia have maintained strong strategic relations for decades, particularly in defense and energy sectors. Even as global political alignments continue to shift and India’s ties with Western nations, including the United States, remain under close observation, Russia continues to be viewed as one of India’s most reliable long-term partners.
Experts believe Putin’s upcoming visit could further deepen bilateral cooperation between the two countries and reinforce their strategic partnership in an increasingly changing global environment. The BRICS Summit is also expected to provide an important platform for discussions on international security, economic collaboration, and the future role of emerging economies in global affairs.
