Five people, including two teenage suspects, died in a tragic shooting incident at the largest mosque in San Diego, USA, on Monday. According to police, the attack took place at the Islamic Center of San Diego and is being investigated as a possible hate crime. Among those killed were a mosque security guard and two other victims who were present during the attack.
Authorities said the two attackers, believed to be minors, opened fire inside or near the mosque before fleeing the scene. A short distance away, both suspects reportedly shot themselves. Police later recovered their bodies from a vehicle parked close to the Islamic Center. Investigators revealed that one of the teenagers had secretly taken three dangerous weapons from his parents’ home, which were later used in the attack.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl stated that officers had already been in contact with the mother of one of the suspects earlier that day. Around 9:40 a.m., she informed police that her son was missing along with several firearms and a vehicle. Soon after, reports of the shooting emerged.
The Islamic Center of San Diego is considered the largest mosque in San Diego County. Along with serving as a place of worship, the center also operates the Al Rashid School, where children are taught Arabic, Quranic studies, and Islamic education. The mosque is located in a residential neighborhood surrounded by homes, apartments, and shopping centers.
During a press conference, Imam Taha Hassan expressed grief over the incident and stressed that the mosque has always welcomed people from all communities. He described the center as “a place of worship, not a battlefield,” while calling for unity and peace in the aftermath of the violence.
The shocking incident has deeply affected the local Muslim community and sparked renewed concerns about hate crimes and gun violence in the United States. Police investigations are ongoing to determine the exact motive behind the attack.
