RCB Confirm Playoff Spot, Intense Battle Continues for Top Four
The race for the IPL 2026 playoffs has become extremely intense after Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Punjab Kings by 23 runs in the 61st match of the season. With this important victory, RCB became the first team to officially qualify for the playoffs, securing 18 points from 13 matches and strengthening their position at the top of the points table. Batting first in Dharamshala, RCB posted a massive total of 222/4 after a powerful performance from their batting lineup. Punjab Kings tried to chase the target but managed only 199/8 in 20 overs. The defeat was especially painful for Punjab because it marked their sixth straight loss after starting the season with six consecutive wins. Their playoff hopes are now hanging by a thread, as they can only reach a maximum of 15 points and will need favorable results from other teams. The battle for the remaining three playoff spots is now wide open, with seven teams still mathematically in contention. Gujarat Titans remain in a strong position with 16 points despite losing to Kolkata Knight Riders. A win in their final match would guarantee qualification. Sunrisers Hyderabad are also looking strong with 14 points and two matches remaining. If they win both games, they could even finish in the top two. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals still have three matches left, giving them a major advantage in the race. Two wins could be enough to secure a playoff berth. Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings are under pressure after recent setbacks. With 12 points from 12 matches, they now need strong victories in their remaining games due to a weak net run rate. KKR, currently on 11 points, also remain alive after a crucial win over Gujarat but need multiple results to go their way. Delhi Capitals still have a mathematical chance, but their poor net run rate and inconsistent performances make qualification highly unlikely. They must win both remaining matches convincingly and depend on several other teams losing. The playoff race has officially ended for Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, both of whom are now eliminated from the tournament. With only a few league matches left, every upcoming game is expected to feel like a knockout contest as teams fight for the final three playoff spots alongside RCB.
