Security Tightened After Threat Email Against West Bengal CM, Suspect Caught
A major security scare unfolded in West Bengal after an email threatening a suicide bomb attack on Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was sent to the Bhawanipur Police Station in Kolkata. The threatening message, allegedly sent in the name of terrorist organization Al-Qaeda, triggered immediate action from police and intelligence agencies. Authorities have now arrested a 27-year-old man identified as Hasnan Iqbal in connection with the case. According to police officials, the threatening email was received on May 14 at around 10:15 a.m. The message warned about a possible bomb attack on the Chief Minister, creating panic within the administration and security agencies. Following the threat, security around Suvendu Adhikari was tightened and cyber experts were assigned to trace the sender. During the investigation, the Kolkata Police cyber team tracked the email through technical analysis and discovered that it had been sent from Garden Reach area of Kolkata. Police later raided Ghulam Abbas Lane and arrested Hasnan Iqbal. Officials said the accused works at a shop and has completed secondary education, but also possesses technical knowledge related to information technology. Investigators revealed that the accused allegedly tried to frame a woman by using her identity in the email. The message reportedly mentioned a woman named Abida Ali and falsely claimed she was linked to Al-Qaeda and planning an attack on the Chief Minister. Police believe the accused used the woman’s name intentionally to mislead investigators and settle personal grievances. Kolkata Police Additional Commissioner Solomon Nesakumar confirmed that the accused admitted to sending the email during interrogation. Police also stated that this was not the first such incident involving the suspect. He had allegedly sent threatening emails in the past to several political figures and even the Election Commission by using names of people he had personal disputes with. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over cyber threats and misuse of digital platforms to spread fear and confusion. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine whether the accused acted alone or had any external support.
