West Bengal’s latest assembly election results have delivered a major political shake-up, with Mamata Banerjee and her party, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), facing a significant defeat. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a dominant victory, winning 206 seats, while TMC was reduced to just 81 seats. One of the most surprising outcomes was Banerjee’s personal loss from the Bhabanipur constituency, where she was defeated by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by a margin of over 15,000 votes.
The scale of the defeat has reportedly left Mamata Banerjee deeply upset. She is scheduled to address the media in a press conference at 4 PM today, where her nephew and senior party leader Abhishek Banerjee is also expected to be present. The press conference is likely to focus on the election results, alleged irregularities, and the party’s next steps.
Tensions were already high during the counting process on May 4 at the Sakshavat Memorial counting center in Bhabanipur, where chaos broke out. Mamata Banerjee accused central security forces, including the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), of preventing her from entering the premises and even alleged physical misconduct. She also claimed that more than 100 seats were “stolen” and accused the Election Commission of bias, referring to it as functioning in favor of the BJP. These allegations are expected to be addressed further in her upcoming press briefing.
Meanwhile, Suvendu Adhikari, who won from both Bhabanipur and Nandigram, credited his victory to strong voter support, particularly from Hindu communities in Nandigram. He expressed confidence in the BJP’s agenda, stating that the party would fulfill promises made by leaders like Amit Shah and Narendra Modi. Adhikari also made sharp remarks against TMC, calling it a corrupt and family-driven party.
Overall, the election results mark a decisive shift in West Bengal’s political landscape, setting the stage for a high-stakes political battle in the coming months.
