Re-Voting in Falta Seat on May 21, Results May 24
The Election Commission has ordered fresh voting in the Falta Assembly constituency of West Bengal after cancelling the earlier polling held on April 29. The decision comes in response to serious complaints of electoral malpractice, EVM tampering, and incidents of violence reported during the second phase of voting. According to the Commission, irregularities were observed across a large number of polling stations in the constituency. Notably, an incident involving an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) sparked major concern when a tape was reportedly found placed in front of the BJP button at one booth. Following a detailed investigation into such complaints, authorities concluded that the integrity of the voting process had been compromised. As a result, the Election Commission has directed that re-polling be conducted across all 285 polling booths in the Falta constituency, including auxiliary stations. The fresh voting is scheduled to take place on May 21, 2026, between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM. The counting of votes for this seat will be held on May 24. The Falta Assembly seat has a total of six candidates contesting the election. These include Jahangir Khan from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Dibangshu Panda from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Abdur Razzak Molla from the Congress, and Sambhu Nath from the CPI(M), along with two independent candidates. Earlier, re-polling was also conducted in other parts of the state. On Saturday, voting was held again at 11 booths in Magrahat West and 4 booths in Diamond Harbour constituencies. Reports suggest that around 90% voter turnout was recorded across these 15 booths. The BJP had demanded a complete re-poll in Falta, citing widespread irregularities. The Commission’s final decision aligns with those concerns, emphasizing the need to uphold democratic values and ensure free and fair elections. West Bengal’s Assembly elections were conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29 across 294 seats. However, due to the cancellation in Falta, counting on May 4 will proceed for only 293 constituencies, with Falta’s results declared later on May 24. Meanwhile, reports of protests have also surfaced from Falta, where locals alleged intimidation by TMC workers during the election process.
