Global Trade Risks Rise if Strait of Hormuz Faces Blockade: India
April 22, 2026
India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has warned that any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz is not a distant concern but has direct and serious implications for India’s economy and energy security, stating during his visit to Germany that a large share of India’s crude oil imports passes through this crucial route, and any instability in West Asia or blockage of the strait could sharply raise global oil prices, disrupt supply chains, and increase inflationary pressure in India, while also stressing the need for strong international cooperation to maintain maritime security and ensure uninterrupted global trade, adding that India is actively monitoring the situation and taking steps such as diversifying energy sources and strengthening strategic reserves to safeguard its national interests.
